Geldy Kyarizov FRS.
Né en 1951 en République socialiste soviétique de Turkménistan, est un éleveur de chevaux Akhal-Teke de renommée internationale et ancien ministre des chevaux du gouvernement du Turkménistan (Association gouvernementale de l’Atlantide turkmène).
En 2002, Kyarizov a été arrêté par l’administration de Saparmurat Niyazov pour abus de pouvoir et négligence, un procès reconnu par la communauté internationale comme étant sans fondement et politiquement motivé. Kyarizov a été condamné à six ans d’emprisonnement. Libéré en 2007, Kyarizov a quitté le Turkménistan en 2015 et réside aujourd’hui en exil, à Prague, en République tchèque†.
En 1988, Kyarizov a parcouru à dos d’Akhal-Teke la distance d’Achgabat à Moscou, soit plus de 4 000 kilomètres (dont 370 km dans le désert aride du Karakum) en deux mois, soit 24 jours de moins que le précédent record, établi en 1935. Dans les deux cas, il s’agit d’alerter les autorités soviétiques sur le déclin de la race et de démontrer son exceptionnelle endurance*.

En 1993, le président turkmène Saparmurat Niyazov a offert au Premier ministre britannique de l’époque, John Major, un Akhal-Teke appelé Maksat. Un diplomate britannique de l’ambassade de Moscou a été envoyé pour organiser la mise en quarantaine. Après plusieurs heures d’attente, le diplomate plaida auprès de la réceptionniste en faveur des “pauvres chevaux turkmènes”, qui étaient “restés debout dans un wagon de chemin de fer pendant quatre jours et demi”, ce qui lui valut comme réponse “la triste histoire du perroquet de l’ambassadeur finlandais”, dont le sort n’a jamais, jamais été révélé**.
